This is Esther, with her three brothers, outside their one-room home north of Nairobi, Kenya. I approached them with Sister Florence, who runs a nearby health clinic. Her job was to tell the children that their mother had died. As we came near, Esther said, “Where’s Mother?” Sister Florence replied, “She has died. Now you are the mother.” Dead for 3 days, the mother’s body lay in the mortuary because there was no money for burial. Esther is twelve years old.
