Mukuru kitchen [1]

[1]

This was it.  Dangerous, inadequate.  Most children arriving at Mukuru school had not had breakfast.  Some days there was food here, and some days there was not.  I looked in the cupboard:  twelve potatoes!  Nothing else.  In the U.S. we say that education is the answer.  But children cannot learn on an empty stomach;  you cannot pull yourself up by your bootstraps if you have no boots.
