HARAMBEE is a charitable nonprofit organization  assisting those in sub-Saharan Africa affected by, and at risk for, HIV infection.  We do this by:  (1) speaking engagements to raise awareness both here and in Africa;  (2) health care initiatives using medical and lay volunteers;  (3)  microeconomics projects giving women & children a "hand up"  to care for themselves without relying on a handout;  (4)  marketing FAIR TRADE craft items made by co-op  artisans;  (5) building communication bridges between education groups here and in Africa.  

Our work empowers the women to:

1. Build community (learn more)
2. Earn a living (learn more)
3. Save for burial expenses (learn more)
4. Stop HIV through education (learn more) ( volunteers)

HARAMBEE promotes partnership with those we want to help. The height of empowerment is the ability to empower another. Therefore, all projects we adopt require participants to give back to their community. E.g., those who receive a dairy goat give the first-born kid to another family; when teaching oral rehydration therapy for infants, we educate trainers who continue teaching when we have left. We foster good management practices, accountability, and sustainability. We have no overhead, salaries, or advertising costs, and every penny gets squeezed ‘til it begs for mercy.

We have just received a shipment of spectacular new handmade FAIR TRADE crafts from Kenya.  Photos of some items (not all--so come back soon) are in the tab above : "Kenyan goods"  and we will now be able to assemble a catalogue.  The items are unique, beautiful, and hand-made.  Having a party?  Put some of our items on display, along with printouts of HARAMBEE information.  Great conversation starters, and your friends will know that you are a supporter of social justice and fair trade in globalization.

Don't forget--a gift for the person in your life who has EVERYTHING (don't we all!?).  We have very sweet gift cards for beehives, trees planted in Africa ($10), a donated high-yield dairy goat in Kenya ($175), a pair of chickens ($15--perfect for teacher, mailman, etc.), and pigs ($60)  YOU get to name the goat and get its photo!  You get to name a pig, too.  We also have gift cards for donations to our "GROW A DOC" scholarship fund for Kenyan medical students.  We bring photos of donors with us to Africa.  Recipients want to see the faces of those who are so kind to them.  You are in their thoughts.  They know God understands Swahili...or Nyanje...because you are an answer to their prayers.

We have goats named Theresa, Floyd, Hope, Blessing, Sunshine, Georgia, Plenty, Elvis, Lincoln, Eunice, Uzuri, Tootsie, Liam, Hannah, and lots more interesting monikers.  These dear animals--donated by YOU--are saving lives every day with their precious, rich milk.
