Mukuru was very frightening when I first saw it in 2001. Our van driver had gotten lost while looking for the school and he was attemtpting to drive through the rock- and rubble-lined passages in Mukuru loosely termed "streets." I was terrified the van would break an axle, and I could never let the students leave the van because it was too filthy, too dangerous. Yet Mukuru is home to thousands of children like these. They must live there and somehow navigate those channels filled with peril.
