
Judy is a cook at the orphanage. She never smiled--ever--until I begged her to do so for a photo. Then I learned why she was not happy: Six months before, she had given birth to a baby girl. At age two months the baby contracted malaria. Two weeks after that, in a weakened state, she developed pneumonia and died.
No one needs to get malaria. Babies do not need to die from pneumonia. Worldwide, 3 million people a year die from malaria, most of them children.
